Rocky Mountain National Park uses two timed-entry products in 2026, and choosing the wrong one can remove the hike a visitor expected to do. Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road includes that corridor and the rest of the park; the other permit excludes Bear Lake Road.
For 2026, Bear Lake Road reservations are required from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the program, while the rest-of-park window runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Entry is assigned in two-hour windows, with no set departure time.
A reservation controls entry, not a specific space at Bear Lake, Glacier Gorge, or Moraine Park. Shuttle use and early arrival still matter after the permit checkpoint.
Trail Ridge Road follows a separate weather calendar. Snow and wind define its seasonal opening and closing, so a Bear Lake reservation does not guarantee an alpine drive.
Summer afternoons add another constraint: lightning. High-elevation hikes should be planned to descend exposed terrain before storms build, even if a later entry time looks less crowded.
September shifts demand rather than ending it. Elk activity and aspen color draw photographers to Moraine Park and other roadside areas, especially on weekends.
Check the NPS permit table for the current release schedule and save the confirmation offline. Then check road and weather conditions again before driving from Estes Park or Grand Lake; the reservation solves only one layer of the day.
Trail Ridge Road and Bear Lake Road are separate planning corridors. A permit product that includes Bear Lake does not promise that Trail Ridge is open after snow, wind, construction, or an early storm. Check the NPS timed-entry page, road status, and alpine weather together. Above treeline, the safest schedule may require leaving before afternoon lightning even when a later reservation window appears less crowded.
