Two parks, different bottleneck shapes
Zion National Park: The Narrows and Angels Landing; A single canyon corridor.
Bryce Canyon National Park: The hoodoo amphitheater; Compact, clustered overlooks.
Angels Landing typically needs a permit by lottery, and a mandatory canyon shuttle runs in the busy season. Rules change yearly, so verify on the official site.
No timed entry. A seasonal shuttle helps with the tight amphitheater parking. Confirm shuttle dates on the official site.
A valid Zion shuttle day does not replace early arrival at Bryce rim lots on the same high-score weekend.
The stacking mistake to avoid
Angels Landing or Narrows permits on a Zion Saturday plus Bryce sunrise at Navajo Loop the same dawn is how southern Utah weekends unravel.
Both parks peak in March, April, May, October comfortable weather—scores can stay high at both on the same week.
The drive between Springdale and Bryce is roughly two hours without stops; treat travel as part of the crowd plan.
Run separate crowd forecasts for each park on its planned date before booking non-refundable lodging.
Suggested two-day split
When you have one weekend and both parks:
- Day 1: Bryce at dawn for Navajo Loop or Queens Garden when Bryce scores lower; rim overlooks midday if sunrise lots were full.
- Day 1 afternoon: Drive to Springdale and scout Zion shuttle timing for the next morning—not both marquee dawns same trip.
- Day 2: Zion first shuttle on a weekday if possible; target Pa'rus or lower Emerald Pools if permit hikes are unavailable.
- Reverse order when the calculator shows Zion lower on your Saturday and Bryce higher on Sunday.
Weekday leverage beats perfect weather Saturday
Best weekdays in our registry: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday at both parks.
A Tuesday Bryce sunrise with a Wednesday Zion shuttle day often beats a spring Saturday at both gates.
Summer heat at Zion shortens canyon hikes; Bryce elevation means cold dawn starts even when afternoon hiking feels mild.
Federal holiday weekends lift scores at both parks even when temperatures are ideal.
When both scores stay high
Capitol Reef on a weekday is the registry-listed calmest Mighty Five swap when Zion and Bryce both peg.
Grand Canyon North Rim or Page-area stops change the loop when Springdale lodging is sold out.
See Zion and Bryce alternatives pages before forcing both parks on one high-score calendar.
Our Utah Mighty Five loop order guide helps when you can extend beyond a single weekend.
Lodging: Springdale, Bryce Canyon City, or Las Vegas hub
Springdale puts you at Zion’s door but adds a long predawn drive if Bryce sunrise is day one.
Bryce Canyon City lodges buy amphitheater proximity but distance from Zion shuttle starts.
Las Vegas as a hub stacks two long driving days—start before 6 a.m. or accept mid-morning lot risk.
Confirm Angels Landing and Narrows permit rules on the official Zion site nightly during the trip.
Families and photographers
Families: The Pa'rus Trail and lower Emerald Pools work for families; ride the first shuttles. Bryce below-rim loops spread crowds faster than Zion's single canyon shuttle.
Canyon walls glow early and late; midday light is flat and crowds peak.. Sunrise at Sunrise and Inspiration Points lights the hoodoos; winter snow is striking..
One iconic dawn per trip beats two famous sunrises on consecutive sleep-deprived days.
Flash-flood risk closes Zion slot canyons in storms—a rainy forecast is a safety pivot, not just a crowd lever.
