Timed entry vs trailhead parking
Recreation.gov timed-entry tickets, when required, control when you may enter the park — usually in a two-hour window. They reduce the worst gate backups NPS documented before the pilot programs.
Inside the park, Delicate Arch, Devils Garden, and The Windows still compete for the same small lots. Entering at 10 a.m. with a valid ticket can still mean no parking at your hike.

Spring and fall feel like peak season
March through May and October bring ideal hiking temperatures and heavy regional school-break travel. Our crowd model peaks in these months, not August.
Summer afternoons exceed 100°F on exposed trails. Many visitors shift to dawn and dusk, which can make sunrise and sunset lots surprisingly busy despite lower monthly totals.
Winter is cold and quiet with short days — excellent for photography at Balanced Rock if roads are clear.
Delicate Arch timing
The 3-mile round trip is on slickrock with exposure near the arch. Midday summer heat is a safety issue, not just a crowd issue.
For parking, plan to start before 8 a.m. or arrive late for sunset. Sunset is popular; winter sunsets are early enough that you may leave in the dark.

Why October weekdays work
October combines comfortable temps with Moab mountain-bike and jeeping events that fill town lodging. A midweek day beats a fall-break Saturday even when color is not the main draw.

Moab gateway pressure
Arches shares Moab with Canyonlands, off-road tourism, and river trips. Sold-out Moab hotels on your dates signal high regional scores even if Arches alone looked moderate.

Heat, sun, and water
Carry more water than you think you need on any exposed trail. There is little shade on the Delicate Arch route.
